Beitbridge West constituency legislator Cde Metrine Mudau has called on the police to open more posts in the area to reduce crime. She said some cases were going unreported because most police stations were far away from the community.Cde Mudau said cases of concern included stocktheft, rape and murder.
She said the villagers had already set up crime committees and were ready to work with the police.“We have a serious problem because some cases of concern go unreported or at times criminals do as they please because some villagers cannot access the few police stations in the area.
“The worst affected area is Masera, where people have to either make reports at Swereki, Zezani and Beitbridge. These areas are more than 20km away from Masera,” she said.Cde Mudau said she had donated cement for the construction of a police post at Masera but the project has not yet taken off ground.
“The community is ready to work with the police and we have started creating crime committees with a view of dealing with crime at village level. We believe police visibility will reduce crime in the most remote areas,” she said. She also appealed to well-wishers to assist with procurement of solar panels for schools and clinics in the area.
