Mkwesha tourney postponed

THE Freddy Mkwesha football tournament that was set to kick off over the weekend in Goromonzi has been postponed as some of the key people involved were attending Adam Ndlovu’s burial in Bulawayo. The tournament, which is in its first year, has been introduced in honour of the former Dynamos player and CAPS United coach Mkwesha and will feature eight teams from the community.

However, chairman of the organising committee Patterson Chogugudza said they felt it would be inappropriate to carry on with the tournament on the day the late great Warriors Adam Ndlovu was being buried. Ndlovu died last week in a car crash which also left his younger brother Peter injured.

Chogugudza said they decided to give Ndlovu befitting honour and confirmed the tournament will go ahead next Saturday at Makumbi Visitation Secondary School.“The Goromonzi West-Domboshava community will stage a soccer tournament in honour of one of its great sons, Mukwesha who played a major role in the formation of Zimbabwe‘s greatest soccer brand, Dynamos FC and upon his return from Europe in the early 1980’s he also played a major role in transforming Caps United to be a potent force in the football field.

“The primary objective of the tournament is not just to entertain the community but to unveil talent underlying in Domboshawa and thus hope that some players will be identified by premier league football teams who will be invited to grace the event,” Chogugudza said. Mkwesha made history when he became the first black player from this country to play in Europe after moving to Portugal to join league side Sporting de Braga in the 1960s. He was a great goal scorer of note but the DeMbare legend ended his playing career in Portugal.
