Divas delight at charity match

At least three women musicians are expected to feature in this year's charity match between musicians and yesteryear football legends scheduled for January 22 at Rufaro Stadium.

The three divas are Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave, Diana "First Lady" Samkange and Sandra "Sandy" Ndebele.

However, it is not clear whether Mai Olivia Charamba will be on the bench as she has previously given her moral support to her singer husband Charles.

Fungisai has vowed to play for the full 90 minutes as one of the strikers while Diana of the "Wandipa" fame will replace Sandy as the medic and Barbara Chikosi (Mama Red Rose) is still the coach.

The Bulawayo-based Sandy will also be playing for the musicians' side that has Oliver Mtukudzi as the captain, Peter Moyo and Morgan Dembo as key strikers.

Dancehall singer Winky D will appear in the line-up for the first time since the charity match was launched five years ago by Chipaz Promotions.

Other players include Hosiah Chipanga, First Farai, Nicholas Zakaria, Alick Macheso, dancer Francis "Slomo" Dhaka, Sulumane Chimbetu, Munya Mataruse, King Shaddy, Victor Kunonga, Freddy "Kapfupi" Manjalima and Tryson Chimbetu.

There will be skills galore on the football legend's side as it features the cream of yesteryear stars among them Moses Chunga, Norman Mapeza, Peter Ndlovu, Rahman Gumbo, Memory Mucherahowa, Brenna Msiska, Vitalis Takawira, Madinda and Adam Ndlovu.

The curtain-raisers will include the Print Media team against the Electronic Media team and Motor Action versus CAPS United.

Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions said they were planning on doing things differently this year.

"We are hoping to assist Freddie Chimombe, the son of the late James Chimombe who has been ill for a long time, and part of the proceeds will also go to junior soccer development," he said.

According to Chipaz, fans will pay US$2 for the rest of the ground and US$5 for the VIP.

There will be lots of entertainment from the performing artistes during and after the matches.
