Allan Chimbetu passes the torch to son Douglas

IF ever there is one family renowned for producing more musicians than any other in Zimbabwe, it is the Chimbetu clan.

Several music fans will recall how the late Simon Chimbetu groomed his young brothers Naison, Briam (both late) and Allan into polished musicians.

And when Simon passed away, Allan carried the torch from his elder brother, in handing down the music notes to his nephew Sulumane.

The dendera music bug also bit Tryson, son to the late Naison, who is carrying the legacy left by his father and uncles.

Sulu and Tryson are two of hottest musicians today, thanks to the music genes that flow in the Chimbetu blood.Only recently, the family witnessed a new addition in the form of Douglas, son to Allan Chimbetu.

Of all the Chimbetu siblings, Douglas is the only one who has had the opportunity of learning the ropes directly from his father.

Unlike what seems to have become the trend in music, where daughters and sons of the legends only take up music after their parents have passed on, Douglas is under the watchful eye of his father.

This makes it easy for the young musician to refine his music skills and eventually fill in his father's shoes in the event that Allan decides to retire.

"Douglas has shown interest in music and all I am doing is taking him through the ropes, before he can fine tune the act on his own," said Allan.

He urged other musicians to impart their skills to their children for posterity."There is nothing wrong in teaching your children music because it is a skill and an art that can come in handy as their source of sustenance. "By playing music, Douglas is gradually becoming his own man," Allan said.
