Harare will tonight reverberate to sounds of good music, when four of Zimbabwe's prominent musicians hold a musical fiesta at the City Sports Centre. Tonight's gig literally opens the entertainment musical floodgates that had been temporarily shut after artistes took a two-week break to recharge their batteries after a hectic festive period.
The gig, dubbed "First Gig of the Year", will see the granddad of music Oliver Mtukudzi sharing the stage with dendera icon Sulumane Chimbetu, gospel diva Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave and Tuku's protegee Munya Mataruse, in what many has described as a magical musical pot pourri.
The four will go on stage well prepared and they will have a lot of surprises for music lovers.
Fans will have an opportunity to have a feel of Tuku's katekwe sounds, dendera, gospel and medley of jazz and contemporary from the young Mataruse.
Show organiser Josh Hozheri said the selection of musicians was meant to cater for different tastes within the music circles.
He added that it was also an ideal set-up meant to connect the artistes with their fans.
"It's an inclusive show, where people from both ends will rub shoulders, while enjoying what some of Zimbabwe's best musicians have to offer.
"We have created a situation where gospel, dendera and Tuku's music fans, will enjoy under one roof," he said.
Tuku is no stranger to live shows where he has proved to be a musician of repute, not only on the local scene but also across the globe.
His artistic excellence has earned him accolades the world over.
The goodwill ambassador for Unicef plays his guitar well and does his katekwe dance with finesse, whenever he gets a chance to show his prowess on the dance floor.
It would be near impossible to attempt to articulate his artistic grandeur, but those in the know will attest that Tuku remains one of Zimbabwe's successful musicians.
With more than 50 albums to his name, composer of more than three movie soundtracks, a contributor to Mahube, Southern Africa's "super-group", and an actor, I can safely say that Tuku has done it all, and his performance tonight is expected to be a memorable one.
On the other hand, Sulu is expected to have a good day in the office, and fans will have an opportunity to see how well the trio of Francis Dhaka, Elton Muropa and Noel Nyazanda has bonded with the Orchestra Dendera Kings.
Apart from playing his old songs, the dendera exponent is also expected to introduce some of his new songs from his yet-to be-named album, scheduled for release in August.
The beauty about Sulu's act is that apart from his vocal abilities, his choreography and stage presence is spot-on. He does not necessarily rely on the rhythm alone to entertain his fans, but he can even keep his fans hooked on with well-choreographed dances, something that Fungisai is good at too, and I am convinced that their collaboration will be a marvel to many a fan .
Like the adage that says dynamite comes in small packages, the diminutive but energetic gospel diva is expected to serenade the crowd with some of her emotive tunes, from her growing discography.
Music fans should expect nothing short of fireworks, when she joins Tuku on stage for a duet on her song, "Hazvaibvira".
Fungisai, who boldly declared that she would be expanding her music territory this year, would be out to consolidate her fan base, by introducing new songs. There is no doubt that Mataruse will have a lot to learn from Tuku, Fungisai and Sulu.
