"Johann Sebastian Bach, Bela Bartok, Ludwig van Beethoven, Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Fryderyk Chopin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Modest Petrovich". All these are some of the world's famous composers of classical music whose names are recorded in music history books.
Every generation finds direction, strength and inspiration from those before them. This creates or gives one an advantage to excel even better because others have covered the groundwork.
Take music from any time, listen to it and then sit by the piano side and let uncle Henry Maseko aka Harry Masco play it for you then you will appreciate what I am talking about.
Loaded with amazing piano skills, Maseko adds his own touch to any song giving a fresh and heightened feel to most songs compared to their original version.
To complement the ability to dominate the grand piano with his long fingers and long arms, the old man plays his heart out. The amount of emotion, spirit and soul fills the atmosphere as he demonstrates that music is his calling. "Name the day, the season the occasion there is a song that is suited and designed for it," says Maseko.
"I have a thousand of songs that I can play such that everyday when I entertain guests I can actually play different songs each day without repeating anyone of them for the whole year," he added.
Well, I couldn't argue that at all looking at this man, the grey hairs that cover the better part of his head and the greying beard seems to tell of great wisdom and a lot of wealth.
Since 1969 Maseko took up music as a profession, like every other musician he used to sing in the school choir.
In 1970, he enrolled at Kwanongoma College of Music to enhance his skills and appreciation of the art of music.
Today he is resident pianist at the Rainbow Towers, where every evening you won't miss him as he passionately entertains guests by the gazebo.
As a young man he started by playing marimba before moving onto the piano. In 1971 to 1974, he was part of Zambezi Marimba Band that used to perform at the Victoria Falls entertaining tourists and guests.
Since then he fell in love with performing in hotels, which has become his home ground.
In 1975 to 1979, he was invited to join Rollikings where his musical career began to move towards advancing his piano skills more as he was required to play the piano in this new set up. Rollikings was made up of Stanley Ukama, Jerry Siyabgwacha, Andrew Rabai, Douglas Jojo and Benson Ndlovu. They mainly performed at the then Southern Sun Hotel.
He went on to form a band called Champ, abbreviations which stood for the names of the band members - Clout, Harry, Andrew, Mark and Patrick.
During the early 80s to 1985, they performed alongside a number of international and renowned artistes such as Mick Stuart, Mitch Mitchel, Dorothy Masuka, Juan Palomo, Don Stanton, Shingombela, Bibi Andrews, Doreen Ncube performing cabaret music.
Maseko took up a solo path 1986 to 1988 then performed with 2Plus2. Playing solos for guests in hotels demands a good understanding of music as guests can at times request any song while they dine. "I get total satisfaction by filling the background with sweet melodies that complement the occasion rather than dominate," said Maseko known by his fans as "Uncle Harry".
Over the years he has composed his own instrumentals which he hopes one day, given the time and resources, he would want to record in the studio. While playing piano gives him the ultimate satisfaction he longs to own one, saying it will give him more opportunities to develop and entertain.
Maseko is one of the finest piano players in Zimbabwe and Music Ride takes this honour to recognise the role that he continues to play by entertaining visitors, tourists and guests.
If you are looking for a classical touch to your music, wedding and corporate function, then here is the man loaded with all your instrumental needs. If you have a piano that you want to throw away or give away don't hesitate to pass it on to this mighty piano man as a gift for the gift he is.
