ZIMBABWE international midfielder Archford Gutu scored his first goal for his new Swedish club, Kalmar FF, on Monday night. The goal, though, came in a 1-5 losing cause against Ukrainian perennial Champions League campaigners Shakhtar Donetsk in a traditional pre-season tournament in Spain.
Gutu's team was featuring in an annual off-season tournament in La Manga, Spain, where the weather is a bit favourable with most of Europe gripped by freezing conditions.
The Swedish league gets underway in March and runs like the local league up to November.
And the 2008 Swedish champions are playing pre-season friendly matches and training and will be going to Cyprus next month for two weeks before the season starts.
The seven-team tournament featured some of the Uefa Champions League seasoned campaigners - Denmark's nine-time champions FC Copenhagen, Russian giants Sparktak Moscow and FC Anzhi Makhachkala, owned by Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov.
Anzhi have Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o in their suqad.
Norwegian club Aalesunds, the hometown team of Fulham's former Liverpool star John Arne Riise, and Tromso, complete the line-up for the Spanish tour.
The teams were grouped in two pools and Kalmar managed to win a single match by beating Norway side Tromso 2-0.
Gutu's side lost 0-1 to Copenhagen before losing again by a similar margin to Norway side Aatesunds.
After competing their group matches, they then met Shakhtar Donetsk, who were playing in the other group against Samuel Eto'o's side and Spartak Moscow.
The Swedish side lost heavily to the seasoned Champions League campaigners.
However, it was not all that gloomy as the Zimbabwean international made his presence felt and scored a second half volley when the scoreline was still 2-0 in favour of Shaktar Donetsk.
In the opening matches Gutu had been introduced as a late replacement and the former Dynamos midfielder was handed a start in the tour's last match against Shaktar and duly found the target.
Speaking from his base yesterday an ecstatic Gutu said he was happy to score against a team like Shakhtar and in his first start for the team.
"I feel very happy to score against Shakhtar and it's sad that we lost. God is great.
"I took a loose clearance with a chest control and volleyed from the edge of the box.
"I was playing on the right in midfield in the first half and switched to central midfield in the second half and scored to make it 2-1.
"I was full of running and played good football before I was substituted in the 80th minute," said Gutu.
The former Young Warriors midfielder bathed in football's fast lane as, for one week, he was rubbing shoulders with some of the best players in the world as he played against a Shakhtar side which featured Brazilian duo of winger Willian, who is wanted by Chelsea and Arsenal.
Douglas Costa was linked to Manchester United and Liverpool during the transfer window.
The team also have Brazillian Fernandino, former Arsenal striker Eduardo and Croatian captain Darijo Srna as well as former Super Eagles striker Julius Agaghowa.
Gutu, who moved to his new club at the start of the year and has been training with team before embarking on the tour, believes he can command a first team jersey at the club.
