Do you fancy watching a game of cricket played over just six overs for each side? Well if you do, the Chegutu Country Club is the place to be today for the Super Six Cricket Bash. The cricket tournament has attracted six teams mainly from Mashonaland West and will feature former and current players.
According to event co-ordinator, Paul Mungofa, each side will field 11 players and a team will get a bonus of 10 runs if the two opening batsmen do fall.
“The idea of this Super Six Bash is to re-ignite cricket especially in Mashonaland West province.
“Cricket had gone down for sometime but now the game is on the way up after ZC introduced this franchise system.
“As a way of getting more people involved, we have invited current and former players to play in this shorter version of the game.
“Former national team players like Dave Mutendera, Walter Chawaguta and Malcom Waller could be making up the teams.
“I also expect Ed Rainsford and Vusi Sibanda to join one of the sides along with some guys from Midwest Rhinos
“The teams will play each other in matches consisting of six overs only and a point system will determine who plays in the final.
“Amongst the rules is a batting order to rotate after every innings, run up not to exceed 5 meters, points for scoring a boundary, four and six, bowling a team out in 6 overs and many more,” said Mungofa.
Mungofa said the Super Six Bash is also an opportunity for up-and-coming players to interact with the experienced.
“There is need to revive cricket at all levels.
“I know of a young boy called Wallace Mubayiwa from Norton who was one of the star players for the Under-13 Zimbabwe team that toured South Africa.
“This lad will be happy to get a chance to play along the established players.
“In a few years, he could be just like Tatenda Taibu because he is doing well,” said Mungofa. Harare lawyer, Thembinkosi Magwaliba, has donated a shield that will be at stake for the winning team.
“We once did a Super Six bash for the Under-13 in Kadoma and the response was positive and now we have tried to make it an open event,” said Mungofa. |
