Children’s day marked

Children in Zimbabwe yesterday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. The day is commemorated on March 15 each year. When The Herald visited Radio Zimbabwe studios in Mbare yesterday, scores of children from as far as Honde Valley, Concession, Mutare and Harare were taking turns to go on air.

Children from various provinces also had the opportunity to broadcast live on television at the ZBC studios at Pockets Hill in Highlands.

This year’s commemorations ran under the theme: “I Trust You, Protect Me’’, an appropriate theme given the spate of child disappearances recorded last year.

Thirty-four, out of the 137 children who went missing across Zimbabwe last year, are yet to be accounted for, while three were found dead.

Nicolette Siyanga (12) from Amandas Primary School in Concession said broadcasting live on radio was a dream come true.

“I always wanted to talk live on radio and I have managed to greet my parents and friends back home,” she said.
